USA, China, European Union pledges to cut GHG emissions (2014)

USA China Emissions

In Nov 2014, USA and China has strike a deal on carbon cuts to limit the Green House Gas (GHG) emissions of their country.

The World emits about 50 GtCO2 annually.

(50 Gigatons of CO2 = 50 Billion tons of CO2.)

China is the biggest emitter of GHG in the world, with an annual emission of 10 GtCO2.  (1/5 of the world’s CO2 GHG emission)

China has agreed to cap it’s GHG output by 2030 or earlier. China’s GHG output should peak by 2030 and fall after 2030.

It has also promise to increase its use of energy from zero-emission sources (solar, wind, nuclear etc) to 20% by 2030.  [China would need to increase zero-emission generation by 800-1,000 gigawatts by 2030 – more than all the coal-fired power plants that exist in China today and close to Total current electricity generation capacity in the United States.”]

European Union (EU), the third largest GHG emitter with an annual emission of 4 GtCO2, has also pledged to reduce it’s GHG emissions.

In Oct 2014, European Union (EU) has endorsed a target of 40% reduction of Green House Gas by 2030. EU has also agreed to increase renewable energy market share to 27%.
