Heat waves, Dry Spell, Sea level rise and UNEP ‘Champions of Earth’ Award

In Jun 2019, a Heatwave in Europe causes temperature in France to soar to 45 Deg, the highest temperature the country experienced in recorded history. [45 Deg is typically the temperature in a Desert in mid-day.]

Scientists warn that Global Warming could make such scorchers more frequent.

Temperature hits 45 degrees Celsius in France as Europe heatwave leaves 2 dead in Spain (Jun) :

In Jul 2019, Singapore is hit by a Dry spell, making July 2019 the Driest July in Singapore since rainfall records began in 1869. The total rainfall in Jul 2019 is only 12.2 mm (1.2 cm), less than 10% of the average monthly (Jul) rainfall of 154.4 mm (15.4 cm).

Global Warming will increase the occurrence of Dry spells/ Droughts in the world.

In Aug 2019, Professor Benjamin Horton, Chair of the Asian School of the Environment, Nanyang Technological University, wrote an Article published in Today Newspaper “What if Singapore does not have 50 to 100 years to deal with climate change?”

https://www.todayonline.com/commentary/what-if-singapore-does-not-have-50-100-years-deal-climate-change

Professor Benjamin Horton has studied the issue of Climate Change for 25 years and is a Singapore Scientist who is part of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) working group that produced a report on the physical science of climate change.

The Article cautioned that “Published peer reviewed studies by members of IPCC suggest there is a one in 20 chance sea-level rise in Singapore could be in excess of 2.5 m by 2100.”

The article suggested “We must meet the Paris Agreement on climate change and global emissions to keep the rate of sea-level rise manageable. This is urgent.

Climate scientists have warned there are only 11 years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5°C above preindustrial levels ( we are already 1°C warmer), beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and sea-level rise.

A rise beyond 1.5°C means sea-level rise will not be a 50- to 100-year problem that we can solve.

To meet the goal of limiting global warming, we must live sustainably. Because of the magnitude and scope of the problem, sustainability is one of those rare issues that if we don’t get it right, we may not be able to reverse, we may not be able to adapt sufficiently.”

………

We all know that Climate change is urgent, it is seriously affecting Humanity and we have to do all we can to reduce Climate change.

United Nations 2018 IPCC report “Global Warming of 1.5 Deg” states that the World should limit Global Warming to 1.5 Deg (rather than 2 Deg) to avoid disastrous changes to the Climate.

The world has already warmed by 1 Degree. To keep the warming within the limit of 1.5 Deg, the World would have to cut Green House Gas by 45% by 2030 to achieve that. (We have 10 years to reduce GHG by Half.)
Men are the only ones who be the cialis generic order victim to this sexual disorder. During meditation, brand cialis cheap silence is the main tool of trade. If regular brand viagra australia courses somehow don’t give you the desired level of satisfaction owing to some internal health treated issues which they are unable to identify immediately and thus when they feel unsatisfied in bed, it creates havoc in their life. The prime reason behind this is that the all natural solutions approaches work in the same manner, one of them may work better for some individuals prescription canada de cialis while not for others.
The report states: “Limiting Global Warming to 1.5 Deg C would require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.” The World would need to change to renewable energy, improve energy efficiency, convert pasture lands to Forest, and change towards a less resource-intensive diets. (more plant-based diets)

Thus, global shift to a less-resource-intensive diet is an essential step to reduce Global Warming.

…………

In recent years, there has been a rising trend of using Meat-Alternatives (plant-based meat/ mock meat) to replace meat.

In 2018, UNEP (United Nation Environment Program) awarded Champions of the Earth Award (Science and Innovation category) to Beyond Meat and Impossible Food. Champions of the Earth Award is the highest environmental award UN confers to Eco-organizations.  This is the first time UN confers this award to 2 plant-based company

Beyond Meat and Impossible Food are both companies that create ‘plant-based meat’. The plant-based meat they created use about 90% less resources then their meat-based counter-part.

“According to a research study conducted by the University of Michigan, a quarter-pound Beyond Burger requires 99% less water, 93% less land and generates 90 % fewer greenhouse gas emissions, using 46 % less energy to produce in the U.S. than its beef equivalent

The Impossible Burger requires approximately 75 % less water and 95 % less land, generating about 87 % lower greenhouse gas emissions than beef burgers.”

Beyond Meat and Impossible Food has seen the demand for their products soared world wide and their products are now available in Singapore restaurants / stores.

Grand Hyatt Singapore sells Beyond Meat Burger and Beyond sausage hot dog. ‘Impossible kebab’ are now found in Stuff’d eateries in Singapore.

China has also develop their own brand of ‘mock meats’ :

It is a good trend that UN is recognizing the environmental benefits of plant-based meat. Replacing meat with plant-based meat may be a way forward to reduce green house gas emissions and conserve the food and water resources, forest resources on the planet.

Let’s do all we can to save the planet and help the people change to a more sustainable way of living.
